Dancing While Delivering: Why Joy at Work Shouldn’t Raise Eyebrows

I’m one of those people who work best with music. As a Digital Marketer juggling SEO, content, social media and graphics, my rhythm often matches the playlists I put on. I dance a little while writing, hum while building reports and sing softly while designing. It’s not a distraction, it’s my way of entering the flow.

Strangely enough, those are the days I deliver more. I produce, I solve, I create. I’m happy and that happiness fuels my productivity.

But recently, I was asked to “review my behaviour”. The exact words from a superior were: “People say that you don’t work, that you’re just sit singing and dancing.

That hit me hard. I was surprised, not because I didn’t care, but because I knew I was delivering far beyond expectations. So why was my energy being misunderstood?

I’ll be honest: I didn’t take it lightly. I’m an open book. If I’m happy, you’ll see it. If I’m frustrated, I can’t pretend otherwise. So after that feedback, I went quiet. No music. No dancing. No singing. Just silence and people noticed. Suddenly, I was “not being myself”.

So, here’s the paradox: If I express myself, I’m told to behave. If I behave, I’m told I’m not being me.

Where do we draw the line between professionalism and authenticity? Can’t we allow people to be themselves, especially when they’re performing, overdelivering and adding value?

I believe joy at work should be celebrated, not questioned. No one should have to dim their light to fit a mould, especially when that light helps them (and their team) shine.

I’m learning to navigate this space with more balance, (trying) showing joy, staying professional, being open, but also aware. It’s not easy, but I truly believe we can create environments where people are allowed to work with their energy, not against it.

To the managers, leaders and peers reading this: Sometimes, that colleague dancing in her seat isn’t slacking. She’s thriving.
